Survival Tips for the Burned Out Content Marketer

Survival Tips for the Burned Out Content Marketer

June 02, 20253 min read

If you’re a business owner, freelancer, or social media manager who’s ever stared at your screen at 11 PM wondering why you agreed to “just knock out one more post”—you’re not alone. In fact, you might be dealing with a full-blown case of content burnout.

What Is Content Burnout, Really?

It’s not just having a bad day or needing one extra cup of coffee. Content burnout shows up as persistent dread—when the idea of creating yet another Instagram caption or email newsletter feels physically draining. You might start second-guessing your posts, procrastinating by cleaning (guilty), or falling into comparison traps online. The message in your head becomes: “Didn’t I already say this? Is this even good?”

Spoiler: it probably is good. You’re just tapped out.

Step One: Walk Away (Yes, Really)

You can’t “push through” content burnout the way you power through a deadline. Trying to do so is like telling someone with a broken foot to just keep walking—it only makes things worse.

Instead, take a real break. I don’t mean just closing your laptop for 30 minutes. Take a day (or even a weekend) where you don’t open your laptop at all. Go outside. Plant something. Move your body. Think about dirt and seeds, not digital strategy.

This isn’t a luxury—it’s a reset.

Step Two: Get Into “Idea Mode”

Once you’ve unplugged for a bit, don’t jump right back into content calendars or Canva. Ease into what I call idea mode.

This is where I pull out a notebook (I have about 12 going at any given time) and just jot things down. I’ll scroll through topics not related to marketing—maybe a client’s industry, or just something I enjoy. The point isn’t to create content—it’s to refill the well.

Avoid anything that says “what’s trending now.” That’s noise. Look for what sparks curiosity.

Step Three: Build a System That Works for You

Here’s the thing: content creation isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some people can batch 20 posts in a day. That’s not me. I’m good for about 90 focused minutes, and then I need to switch gears.

What helps me most is having a lightweight system:

  • Notes app on my phone for random ideas

  • Google Sheets for fleshing out themes

  • Trello to organize and assign content by client or project

This way, I’m never starting from zero—even when I’m feeling a little low on energy.

Step Four: Repurpose Like a Pro

If you’re creating something new every single time you sit down, you’re doing too much. One of my favorite strategies is the hub and spoke model—take one main topic and spin it into multiple formats: carousels, blog posts, short videos, polls, etc.

You can even crowdsource your next round of content by asking your audience a question. One poll could fuel a whole month of posts.

A Word on AI

Yes, I use AI. Not for everything, but it’s helpful when I’m stuck—especially on headlines or rewriting something that just isn’t hitting right. But it’s never plug-and-play. You have to edit, personalize, and make sure it still sounds like you.

And let’s be real—AI loves exclamation points and hyphenated words. Some of my clients hate both.

The Big Takeaway

Content marketing isn’t just about grinding harder—it’s about being more intentional. Know when to pause. Know how to repurpose. And most importantly, know how you work best.

If you’re feeling burned out, try scheduling just one idea session this week. Don’t open Canva. Don’t scroll Instagram. Just brainstorm like it’s 2005 with a pen and a notebook.

Marketing doesn’t have to take over your life. And if you build a system that honors your brain, your energy, and your boundaries—it won’t.
